Airworthiness requirements focus on how system security will be affected if the software running on the aircraft makes an error. By combining customer requirements with system and safety requirements, a security level is assigned to the system and subsystems. Ex. Software and hardware that can cause fatal (catastrophic) consequences in case of error are called level A.

When it is decided that the system/subsystem functions assigned the safety level will be implemented by software, RTCA's DO-178C standard is used as a guide.
